John 6:5-6 (in part) … Jesus…seeing that a large crowd was coming to Him, said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread, so that these may eat?” He said this to test him, for He Himself knew what He was intending to do. Philip answered, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for…everyone to receive a little.”
Jesus asked Philip a question to test him. A test proves what you know. A test reveals who you have become. Philip’s test proved that didn’t know who he traveled with and revealed that he still lacked faith. Perhaps by now Philip had seen Jesus do many miracles, yet he still thinks of mere human solutions to this problem.
Do you face a test right now? I believe it’s a rare day when Christians do not encounter tests. Some challenge us more than others, but each one proves how much we believe that Jesus walks with us and how much we trust Him to supply what we need.
Is Jesus any less with us than He was with Philip? He himself has said, “I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you.” (
Hebrews 13:5b)
Not a lot of certainty exists in this world. So many things we count on, even for generations, eventually crumble and fail.
Only one thing can we count on every time. Jesus, the living Word of God abides with us and He knows what he intends to do. He accompanies us now. He awaits us in the future. His supply for our need has already been positioned for us to receive. At the end of our tests, God rewards. (
James. 1:12) Let every test confirm our faith.
