  • “One Thing’s for Sure”

John 6:5-6 (in part) … Jesus…seeing that a large crowd was coming to Him, said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread, so that these may eat?” He said this to test him, for He Himself knew what He was intending to do. Philip answered, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for…everyone to receive a little.”

Jesus asked Philip a question to test him. A test proves what you know. A test reveals who you have become. Philip’s test proved that didn’t know who he traveled with and revealed that he still lacked faith. Perhaps by now Philip had seen Jesus do many miracles, yet he still thinks of mere human solutions to this problem.

Do you face a test right now? I believe it’s a rare day when Christians do not encounter tests. Some challenge us more than others, but each one proves how much we believe that Jesus walks with us and how much we trust Him to supply what we need.

Is Jesus any less with us than He was with Philip?  He himself has said, “I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5b)
Not a lot of certainty exists in this world. So many things we count on, even for generations, eventually crumble and fail.

Only one thing can we count on every time.  Jesus, the living Word of God abides with us and He knows what he intends to do. He accompanies us now. He awaits us in the future.  His supply for our need has already been positioned for us to receive. At the end of our tests, God rewards. (James. 1:12) Let every test confirm our faith.

  • Who Knows

    Inspired by:
Ecclesiastes 6:12 “For who knoweth what is good for man in this life, all the days of his vain life which he spendeth as a shadow? for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?”

    All the plans I had,
    all the ways I thought
    I'd do God's work –
    most of them
    came to naught.
    But somehow it seems
    I lived as I ought.

    Who knows, but
    God did things
    I knew not of,
    moving my life
like a hand in a glove,
    to set in place ways
    to express his love.

  • Who's Your Daddy?

Thinking about Father's Day, I pondered our heavenly Father.

    God our Father

    F. It is a fact our fascinating and famous Father is faithful; he forgives failures.
(The fellow who is faithful to our Father will be found in fine fettle.)

Though a formidable fighter, our Father is fair.

He is a full-fledged friend to His family of followers.

    A. Affirming and attentive, He is abundant in affection.
Our father is authentic, authoritative, aware and active.
He is an able avenger against His admirer’s adversaries.

    T. He is Terrific! Tough, though tender, He is thoughtfully tenacious, triumphant in all He tries.

Our Father, a trustworthy teacher, transfers treasures of truth from His timeless trove.

    He is tactful.

    H. He is holy, honorable, and head of heaven’s host.
Historically, he was a human (Hebrew) for thirty three years.
He is a husband to His holy bride.
Our Father is a healer and helper.

    E. He is enduring, endearing, exalted, eternal.
    He is elegant.
Without equivocation, His expressions are eloquent.
He enhances everyone’s existence. He exudes enlightenment.

    R. He is real, a righteous and royal ruler.
He is renowned for repairing and rectifying the repentant rebel.

After rain, He raises a rainbow.

Let rejoicing ring out; His resurrected Son is returning!

  • Preachers are Made, not Born

    Preachers are made not born.

If you don't know with certainty that Jesus Christ died for your sins, you are not fit to preach the gospel. You need to know that you drove the nails through his hands and thrust the spear into his side.

Dedicate yourself to study of the Word of God.  If you are not one hundred percent convinced the Bible alone is the Word of God, get out now!

You don't need Bible college, though there are some good ones.  You need the Holy Spirit and a converted heart hungry for truth.  In humility receive the Word. Pray everyday for guidance and insight into the Word.

The only systematic theology you need is covenant.  Learn what covenant is and is not.
The Bible is a collection of covenant documents; study it as such.  C.  H.  Spurgeon said, ‟No subject is more fully the key to unlock all theology as that of covenant.”

Forget every thing your denomination ever taught you.  At least put it to the side and study the Word as though you never read it before.  When you look up from your studies, if some of your denominational traditions are still standing, hang on to them.  Your entire denomination may disappear when you see it with Holy Spirit trained eyes.  Speaking of the Holy Spirit, be sure you know what the Bible really teaches about Him.  Lies about Him and His work abound.

Find a church with mature leaders where they will let you expound on the word regularly, at least once a week.  If you can't preach, teach.  Though they are not the same, both necessitate that you live in the Word.  Also, either one will provide public speaking experience.

Pray for God to put you into a congregation where you'll be needed.  Abandon any ridiculous thought of finding a church where you can be ‟comfortable”.  In most churches you'll find the bitter, the heart broken, liars and thieves, hypocrites, legalists, and snobs – as well as a lot of saints of God who will encourage and edify you.  Love them all with a love only Christ can put in your heart.

Expound the Word and love the people, week-in and week-out.  God will take you to the heights of spiritual wonder and lead you through the depths of the human condition.  He will teach you how to apply the Word to human need.

Every time you think you just can't stand it any more, pray for the strength to hang on a bit longer. In about twenty-five years God will have transformed you into a preacher.  Twenty years, if you are a fast learner.  Congratulations, you're now ready to go to work.

About Me

  • Being whole-heartedly converted, I pledged my allegiance to Jesus Christ in January of 1979. He compelled me to preach from the beginning. I began on-the-job training with the minister who baptized me. Two years later the Lord put me with a church and we worked together for twenty years. My wife's health necessitated a move to another state, Oregon, where we have been since 2000. I pastor a small church and own a saddle shop. I started making and repairing saddles in 1969. Besides saddles and tack, I also build other leather items like holsters and belts. I'm just now trying to develop a writing ministry.
